hello out there

7 February 2012

School is going great – the blog is not. We are spending a lot of time with workbooks, and read a lot, and that is just not interesting to blog about. We do other things too, but it just doesn’t come natural to blog about them. Some homeschoolers live through their blog somehow. But we feel this is not the right thing for us to do. I do have a few projects that we did, that I will eventually blog about though.

Clock

9 January 2012

We took a break from the math books and are now learning to tell time. I find the math books we use too late and too slow in this subject.  Instead we use a fun workbook with stickers.

Prof and snoopy learned that an hour has 60 minutes and that a minute has 60 seconds. They learned that they can figure out the minutes by doing skipcounting with 5. Today we practiced half hours. Before the end of the week we will reach digital time and to tell time by 24 hours.

I can’t wait to have kids that I can ask what time it is and know that they will answer me right! ;-)

Hugsy can do pretty much what she wants. Today she did some spelling. She knows all the letters and she will probably pretty soon start reading. Homeschooling is fantastic. Neither of our other kids did this when they were 4. They were too busy going to pre-K.

Beeswax candles

16 December 2011

Today we made beeswax candles together with our homeschooling friends. The kids loved to do this. They made the big pile of small candles. Prof and Snoopy made a lot. Hugsy gave up after half a candle and joined her little baby brother watching Bob the Builder. Myself I made four big candles for shabbat. We will light the red ones tomorrow evening!
My friend brought her friend – who brought all the stuff we needed. If someone knows where I can buy beeswax sheets in Israel – please tell me!

The story of stuff

4 December 2011

In our last few science classes we learned about keeping water and air clean, to protect the nature, and everything living in it. To not waste fresh water, especially here in Israel where we don’t have a lot of rain. We talked about cars vs public transportation, or even better- walking. We talked about factories and The story of stuff. Unfortunately this video is still too hard to understand for 6 and 7-yearolds.. especially when they don’t know English. But we want them to grow up very aware of this concept. We don’t buy cheap things from plastic just because they are cheap. We don’t buy more than we need. We rather buy quality than quantity. This is SO important!!

This is a video that all of us would need to watch once in a while…

Our kids response on the cars and transportation was, “Ok so then we are already good people” because we neither have a car, nor do we travel with public transportation a lot. Well they are right there, but I try to teach them there is always more we can do.

Socialization

4 December 2011

-Homeschooling? Aren’t you worried about the kids’ socialization?

-Yes, we are! That is why we homeschool!
